The Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) of Ghana is championing a transformative initiative with the launch of the Revalidation program, “Your Pathway to Excellence.” This initiative, in partnership with the University of Huddersfield, United Kingdom, is part of the project titled, “Strengthening the ability of the Nursing and Midwifery Council (NMC) of Ghana to oversee and regulate the professional register of nurses and midwives and to ensure high-quality nursing and midwifery care” (GHWP LG.12). Funded by the UK Department of Health and Social Care through the Tropical Health and Education Trust (THET), the project aims to introduce REVALIDATION as part of the existing License (PIN/AIN) Renewal or Relicensing processes for Nurse Assistants, Nurses, and Midwives in Ghana.
The project, set to run from February 2024 to January 2025, underscores the Council’s dedication to promoting good practice and maintaining high standards within the nursing and midwifery professions. The Revalidation process involves practitioners continuing to renew their licenses annually while also demonstrating every three years that they adhere to the Council’s practice standards and code of ethical conduct.

Participation in Revalidation is designed to show that Nurse Assistants, Nurses, and Midwives are up-to-date and practicing safely and effectively. This ongoing process is mandatory for all practitioners and is not an assessment of their fitness to practice. Instead, it encourages continuous professional development and accountability.
To ensure a seamless implementation, the Council will engage in stakeholder consultations, develop the revalidation framework, and enhance its Management Information Systems (MIS) and ICT infrastructure. The project implementation period will be used for:
- Stakeholder engagement and consultation.
- Building the capacity of the Council to develop the revalidation framework.
- Enhancing the MIS and ICT infrastructure to support the revalidation framework.
Post-project, between January 2025 and the anticipated roll-out in January 2026, efforts will focus on:
- Reviewing and refining sensitization materials.
- Educating practitioners, other health workers, and employers on the revalidation requirements and processes.
- Training practitioners on navigating the revalidation portal.
- Streamlining and testing the developed revalidation framework and systems.
- Addressing frequently asked questions (FAQs).
This initiative represents a significant stride toward enhancing the quality of care delivery and professional development within the nursing and midwifery professions in Ghana. The NMC invites all stakeholders to support this essential endeavor, aimed at fostering a culture of continuous improvement and excellence in healthcare.
