The Bank of Ghana has hosted a seminar on Central Bank Digital Currencies (CBDCs) and digital payments, bringing together central bank governors, senior officials from the IMF and World Bank, and experts from across Africa. The seminar focused on remittances, compliance, and interoperability in the digital transformation of financial systems.

Dr. Johnson P. Asiama, Governor of the Bank of Ghana, highlighted the potential of digital innovation to drive inclusive growth and support livelihoods, but noted that cross-border payments still face challenges such as high transaction costs, slow processing times, and limited transparency.

The seminar discussed initiatives such as the Pan-African Payment and Settlement System (PAPSS) and the Africa NextGen Digital Payment Infrastructure (DPI) initiative, aimed at reducing dependency on non-African clearing pathways and strengthening financial sovereignty. Experts emphasized the need for policy coherence, regulatory agility, and international digital standards that are inclusive of African contexts.
