The International Monetary Fund (IMF) and the World Bank Group have launched a consultation to develop a long-term vision for the future of the world economy, international cooperation, and the roles of the two institutions. This initiative marks the 80th anniversary of the Bretton Woods Conference, which established the IMF and the World Bank.
A group of external advisors, comprising Sri Mulyani Indrawati, Patrick Achi, and Mark Malloch Brown, will guide the consultation process, working closely with IMF Managing Director Kristalina Georgieva and World Bank Group President Ajay Banga. The advisors will engage with global stakeholders to envision the world economy 20-30 years from now, explore the evolution of multilateralism, and determine how the IMF and World Bank can best support stability and progress on a livable planet.
Georgieva emphasized the importance of a longer-term perspective for the IMF to serve its global membership effectively. Banga noted that the World Bank must prepare for future challenges to realize a world free of poverty on a livable planet. This consultation aims to shape the future of global economic cooperation and the roles of the IMF and World Bank in achieving a sustainable and prosperous world.
