The Inspector General of Police has ordered a raid on illegal gold mining sites in Wassa Gyapa, Western Region, following persistent reports by Joynews. The area has been plagued by huge excavations and notorious illegal mining activities since 2023, with Wassa Gyapa, Wassa Dadieso, and Wassa Ntwentwena becoming hubs for the illegality.
A team of 8 senior police officers and 92 personnel, led by Vitus Napen of the Asankragua Divisional Police Headquarters, embarked on an anti-galamsey operation within the Wassa-Gyapa enclaves. The operation targeted illegal miners operating approximately 500 meters off the Kumasi-Tarkwa highway along the roadside.
The police proceeded to Wassa Gyapa, where 13 illegal miners were arrested. The operation was carried out with supervisory support from ASPOL/OPS/WCR Mr. De-Ben Edem Selassie and C/Supt. William Jabialu.
The IGP’s action comes after a post by Erasmus Asare on the illegalities in the area, highlighting the need for authorities to take action against the menace. The raid is part of efforts to curb the menace of illegal mining in the region and restore order in affected communities.
