Veteran Nigerian singer, songwriter, and actress OnyekaOnwenu has passed away at the age of 72. Reports indicate that Onwenu died on Tuesday night after performing at an event in Banana Island, Lagos.
The iconic singer reportedly collapsed after performing at the birthday celebration of Stella Okoli, the owner of EmzorPharmaceuticals. Onwenu was subsequently taken to a hospital in Victoria Island, where she was confirmed dead, according to The Guardian Newspaper. Her family has yet to confirm her death.
Born in 1952 in Obosi, Anambra State, Nigeria, OnyekaOnwenu began her music career in the 1980s, releasing her debut album “For the Love of You” in 1981. She gained widespread acclaim with numerous albums and singles, including the hit song “One Love.”
Beyond her music career, Onwenu also made significant contributions to Nollywood, acting in several films and earning numerous awards for her work in both music and film. She is celebrated as one of the pioneers of Nigerian music.
Onwenu was also active in politics. She served as the Chairperson of the Imo State Council for Arts and Culture in 2013 and was appointed Director-General of the National Centre for Women Development in 2016.
