The Ministry of Health (MoH) and the Ghana Health Service (GHS), in partnership with GIZ, have intensified a national push to strengthen patient self-care by hosting the AYA Innovation Challenge. The event, themed “Designing the Future of Patient Self-Care,” gathered software developers to pitch locally-developed digital tools aimed at empowering citizens to better manage their own health, particularly in response to the growing national burden of non-communicable diseases (NCDs).
Speaking on behalf of the Minister for Health, Hon. Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, Dr. Hafez Adam Taher, the Director of Technical Coordination, emphasized that the initiative reflects Ghana’s urgent need to empower citizens to better manage their health, citing the continuous rise in cases of Type 2 diabetes and hypertension. He praised the AYA Innovation Challenge for successfully encouraging practical solutions that foster better collaboration between patients and the established health system. This sentiment was echoed by the Public Health Director of the Ghana Health Service, Dr. Franklin Asiedu-Bekoe, who stressed the necessity of adopting “new, smarter and more efficient approaches” to curb the increasing morbidity and mortality associated with NCDs.
The competition showcased various software applications, with the ultimate winning innovation receiving funding and guided support for integration into the national health system. The selection of the winner by a joint panel from the Ministry and the Ghana Health Service underscores the government’s commitment to boosting locally developed health technologies and ensuring that the solutions adopted are practical and sustainable within Ghana’s healthcare context. This strategic focus aims to leverage domestic technological talent to provide accessible and efficient self-care tools for chronic disease management across the country.
