Ghana’s Health Minister, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh, has expressed deep concern over the poor state of the Ridge Hospital, a major healthcare facility in Accra, after an unannounced inspection on Friday, April 11, 2025. The Minister toured key departments, including the emergency unit and imaging department, and interacted with hospital management to assess service delivery and infrastructure challenges.

The surprise visit revealed that critical diagnostic equipment, including MRI and CT scan machines, have been non-functional for over two years, sparking Minister Akandoh’s disappointment. “This is not the Ridge Hospital we handed over to the former administration. It must go back to its glory,” he stated, emphasizing the need for urgent attention to address these issues.

Despite the challenges, Minister Akandoh commended healthcare professionals for their dedication to working under difficult conditions. He assured that the Ministry would collaborate with hospital management to improve working conditions and patient care, reflecting the government’s commitment to strengthening Ghana’s healthcare infrastructure.

The Minister’s visit highlights the government’s focus on addressing healthcare challenges. In 2022, his predecessor, Kwaku Agyeman-Manu, inaugurated advanced neurosurgical equipment at the hospital, aiming to enhance medical capabilities and make Ghana a center for medical knowledge.

Immediate follow-up actions will be taken to address the identified issues, with a focus on revamping the hospital’s infrastructure and equipment to provide quality healthcare services to the population.
