The Christian Health Association of Ghana (CHAG) is a critical and long-standing partner to the Government of Ghana, functioning as the second-largest provider of health services in the country after the Ghana Health Service. CHAG is an umbrella organization that coordinates the activities of over 344 health facilities and health training institutions owned by more than 30 Christian church denominations. It operates as a recognized Agency of the Ministry of Health, working within national policies and guidelines while retaining autonomy to advocate for sector improvements. Its core mandate is rooted in promoting the Healing Ministry of Christ by providing holistic health service provision and training, particularly focusing on the health needs of the poor, vulnerable, and marginalized populations.

The most significant contribution of CHAG lies in its extensive reach into the most remote and underserved communities across all regions of Ghana. CHAG facilities, which include hospitals, clinics, and health training institutions, are strategically located in hard-to-reach areas where government presence is often limited.

This network is estimated to provide nearly one-third (some estimates place it between 30% and 40%) of all formal healthcare delivery in Ghana, despite owning a much smaller percentage of the nation’s total health infrastructure.

This vast presence makes CHAG indispensable for the successful implementation of key national health policies, such as the National Health Insurance Scheme (NHIS), the Free Primary Healthcare Policy, and the government’s pursuit of Universal Health Coverage (UHC).

Their deep community embedment ensures that national health programs are accessible even in the most deprived parts of the country.

Beyond physical infrastructure and service delivery, CHAG’s role is defined by its commitment to ethical leadership, compassion, and quality improvement. The Association has established a reputation for maintaining service continuity, often operating even during national health worker strikes, which underscores its mission-driven, non-stop service approach. It actively promotes quality improvement initiatives, such as the SafeCare Quality Improvement system, and focuses on integrating values like empathy and dignity into patient care, as noted by the Health Minister.

The Ministry of Health has publicly committed to deepening its partnership, supporting CHAG’s training institutions, and integrating CHAG’s core ethical values into future policy documents like the Health Sector Medium-Term Development Plan (2026–2029), cementing its status as a strategic and indispensable pillar of the national health system.
