A joint statement issued today by the African Union Election Observation Mission, the ECOWAS Election Observation Mission, and the West African Elders Forum expressed deep concern over the armed forces’ announcement of a coup d’état, which came just as the nation awaited official election results.
“We deplore this blatant attempt to disrupt the democratic process and the gains that have been achieved thus far,” the statement read. “We urge the African Union and ECOWAS to take the necessary steps to restore constitutional order.”
The observers commended the people of Guinea-Bissau for their peaceful participation and civic engagement during the polls, and praised the professionalism of electoral staff, security personnel, and party agents. However, they voiced alarm over the arrest of top officials, including those overseeing the electoral process, and called for their immediate release to allow the democratic process to continue.
Earlier in the day, the heads of the three missions — H.E. Filipe Jacinto Nyusi (AU), H.E. Issifu Baba Braimah Kamara (ECOWAS), and H.E. Goodluck Jonathan (West African Elders Forum) — issued a separate appeal for calm, urging the Bissau-Guinean people to prioritize peace, stability, and national well-being during this sensitive period.
“We reaffirm our commitment to supporting the country on its democratic path,” they stated, emphasizing the need for restraint and unity.
