Accra, Ghana – Felix Kwakye Ofosu, the Minister of State in charge of Government Communications, announced today that he will hold a crucial press briefing at 4:00 PM to delve into the controversial National Cathedral project. His terse statement, “I will hold a press briefing at 4pm on the National Cathedral and matters arising. Stay tuned,” has heightened anticipation following a damning audit report and President John Dramani Mahama’s recent directive for the project’s dissolution.

The briefing comes in the wake of a Deloitte and Touche audit report, whose findings, publicly disclosed by Kwakye Ofosu, indicate significant financial irregularities and a staggering $97 million spent with little physical progress. Key issues highlighted include a GHS 4.9 million payment discrepancy involving the architectural firm Sir David Adjaye & Associates Ltd., and payments made without approved agreements.

President Mahama has reportedly ordered a forensic audit into the project’s finances and directed the Attorney-General to initiate steps for the lawful termination of the project’s contract, including the dissolution of its Board of Trustees. The National Cathedral Board, however, has expressed disappointment over the President’s directive, calling it premature and lacking a basis in formal findings of wrongdoing, while maintaining their commitment to the cathedral’s vision.

The project, initially envisioned as a national symbol of faith, has been plagued by controversies ranging from its funding model to accusations of lack of transparency and procurement breaches. Today’s press briefing by Kwakye Ofosu is expected to provide further clarity on the government’s stance and the way forward for the beleaguered National Cathedral project.
