The Government of Ghana has announced a mandatory closed season for the marine fishing fleet in 2025 to allow fish stocks to replenish.
The closed season will affect different segments of the fishing industry on varying schedules. Industrial trawlers will observe a two-month closure, running from July 1 to August 31, 2025. The semi-industrial inshore vessels will be subject to a one-month closure, commencing on July 1 and concluding on July 31, 2025.
According to the Fisheries Minister Emelia Arthur it is important to note that Artisanal fishers, who operate the traditional canoe fishing vessels, are not affected by the closed season directive for 2025 and may continue their operations during this period. The policy aims to ensure the sustainability of marine resources.
