In a move to promote gender equality and economic growth, the government of Ghana has announced plans to empower women-led industries. Elisabeth Ofosu-Adjare, Minister-designate for Trade and Agribusiness, revealed the government’s intentions during her vetting, emphasizing the need to increase women’s representation in leadership roles within the trade and agribusiness sectors.
The government’s efforts are part of a broader goal to implement the Affirmative Action Act, championed by President John Mahama. Ofosu-Adjare stated that the Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness, and Industry will introduce policies aimed at promoting women to upscale in the industry and ensuring more women in top positions.
To support women-led businesses, the government will enact specific initiatives and laws, providing incentives to create a more supportive environment for their growth and success. This program will help young women entrepreneurs grow, scale up, and navigate the challenges of entrepreneurship, with mentors from women already in top positions.
The government’s initiative is a welcome move, as women-owned businesses in Ghana contribute significantly to the country’s economy, spanning various industries such as agriculture, retail, technology, and finance ¹. By empowering women-led industries, the government aims to promote economic growth, reduce unemployment, and create a more inclusive business environment.
