Accra, Ghana – Northern Ghana is facing an unprecedented crisis as a severe drought continues to ravage the region, leaving thousands of farmers on the brink of disaster. The area has experienced no rainfall for over two months, resulting in stunted crop growth and raising widespread concerns about food security.
In response to the growing crisis, Finance Minister Dr. Mohammed Amin Adam has requested the release of GHS500 million from the Contingency Fund to address the immediate needs of affected communities. This request comes just days after the government unveiled an GHS8 billion relief package to support farmers affected by the drought.
Dr. Amin Adam emphasized the need for urgent financial intervention in a letter to Parliament’s Finance Committee, citing the critical nature of the situation. The government is seeking additional funds to support its efforts to mitigate the effects of the drought, including:
- A ban on grain exports
- Realigning existing fiscal operations within the 2024 Budget
- Engaging development partners to provide support
The Contingency Fund withdrawal request is in accordance with constitutional and legislative guidelines, including Article 177 subsection 1 of the 1992 Constitution and Section 36 subsection 1 of the Public Financial Management Act, 2016.
The government’s swift response aims to address the immediate needs of affected communities and prevent further devastation from the drought. With the livelihoods of thousands of farmers hanging in the balance, the situation remains dire, and the need for urgent action is clear.
