The Government of Ghana and Goldfields Ghana Limited have reached an agreement on a transitional plan for the Damang Mine, according to a statement issued by the Presidency on Wednesday, April 23, 2025. Under the agreement, Goldfields’ subsidiary, Abosso Goldfields Limited, will be issued a new 12-month mining lease pending parliamentary ratification in May 2025.

During the transition period, Goldfields will resume open-pit mining, conduct feasibility studies to establish Damang’s reserves and mine life, and continue processing existing stockpiles under the supervision of a joint management team composed of representatives from the Government of Ghana and Goldfields.

The statement , signed by Government Spokesperson Felix Kwakye Ofosu, aims to safeguard jobs and ensure a successful transition and eventual transfer of a viable mine to Ghanaian ownership. Additionally, both parties have pledged to collaborate to enhance Ghana’s mining sector potential and advance discussions on the renewal of the lease for the Tarkwa mine, due in 2027.
