The Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago, GNC, was honored to be invited by Mayor Brandon Johnson to attend a powerful ceremony commemorating the legacy of Jean Baptiste Point DuSable, the founding father of Chicago. The event took place yesterday at the iconic Pioneer Court, a site rich with historical resonance.
The evening unfolded as a vibrant celebration of heritage and unity, with a strong presence of Haitian Americans, including representatives from the Haitian American Museum of Chicago and the DuSable Heritage Association. City officials, dignitaries, and community leaders gathered to pay tribute to a visionary whose pioneering spirit helped shape the city we proudly call home.
Highlights included stirring keynote addresses by Dilla, a Chicago-based urban historian and beloved social media educator known for his engaging videos on the city’s cultural roots; Nicolas Paul, President of the DuSable Heritage Association; and Mayor Brandon Johnson himself, whose words reaffirmed the importance of honoring immigrant contributions to Chicago’s story.
It was truly a privilege to stand among such legacy and excellence. GNC executives had the opportunity to connect with fellow immigrant leaders, cultural organizations, and city officials, relationships that continue to strengthen the civic fabric of our great city.
As we move forward, GNC remains committed to fostering a strong and collaborative relationship with the Mayor’s Office and other institutions, working together to uplift and empower the Ghanaian community and contribute meaningfully to Chicago’s shared future.
