Geneva, Sept. 26, 2024 – The World Health Organization (WHO) has issued a rallying cry to eliminate rabies, a centuries-old disease that claims tens of thousands of lives annually.

Rabies remains a significant health concern in over 150 countries, primarily in Asia and Africa. The viral disease is particularly devastating, with 40% of its victims being children under 15.

According to the WHO, dog bites and scratches are responsible for 99% of human rabies cases. However, this can be prevented through dog vaccination and bite prevention measures.

The stark reality is that once the rabies virus infects the central nervous system and clinical symptoms appear, the disease is fatal in 100% of cases.

In observance of World Rabies Day on September 28, the global health community is highlighting the tools and technologies available to break the cycle of this deadly disease.

“Together, we can eliminate rabies,” emphasized the WHO. “We have the vaccines, medicines, and technologies to make this happen.”

The organization urges individuals to take proactive steps to protect themselves and their communities:

  • Vaccinate dogs
  • Prevent dog bites
  • Seek immediate medical attention if bitten

By joining forces, the world can overcome this ancient scourge and create a rabies-free future.
