Accra, Ghana – The Elections Dispute Adjudication Committee (EDAC) of the Ghana Journalists Association (GJA) has nullified the results of the Ashanti Region Chairperson elections held on June 30, 2025, ordering a re-run within 14 working days. The decision comes after a thorough review of a petition and evidence presented, revealing critical irregularities that compromised the integrity and fairness of the electoral process.
According to a statement signed by Zakaria Tanko Musah, Esq., Chairman of the EDAC, the irregularities included a failure to adhere to certain GJA constitutional provisions, which led to the creation of a supplementary voter list on election day. The eligibility of some members on this supplementary list was subsequently challenged.
Furthermore, it was discovered that a voter registered in the Greater Accra Region was improperly allowed to cast a ballot in the Ashanti Region. Given the extremely narrow margin of victory in the initial election—just one vote—the EDAC concluded that these infractions could have significantly impacted the outcome.
To restore member confidence and ensure the electoral process truly reflects the will of the members, the EDAC has directed that the GJA Elections Committee publish a full list of eligible voters in daily newspapers and provide copies to all contestants at least three clear working days before the re-run. Crucially, no supplementary list will be permitted for the upcoming election.
The EDAC urged all members to actively engage in the implementation of these directives to ensure the highest integrity of the re-run. A full report detailing the committee’s findings and recommendations will be submitted to the secretariat and made public in due course.
