In a bid to strengthen Ghana’s health sector, a delegation led by Michelle Keane, the World Bank’s Operations Manager for Ghana, Liberia, and Sierra Leone, paid a courtesy visit to the Minister of Health, Kwabena Mintah Akandoh. The meeting aimed to discuss ongoing projects and explore new areas of cooperation in the health sector.

Michelle Keane emphasized the need for reform to sustain physician assistants who have been temporarily hired to provide healthcare at primary health center levels. This reform is crucial to ensuring that Ghanaians continue to receive quality healthcare services.
Mintah Akandoh outlined the government’s health priorities, which include establishing a Medical Trust Fund, providing free primary healthcare, constructing regional hospitals, and upgrading the Greater Accra Regional Hospital into a teaching hospital. He expressed hope that the World Bank would assist Ghana in strengthening its surveillance system to detect and contain emerging pandemics or epidemics.
The Minister assured the delegation that his doors are always open and that he would give specific attention to World Bank projects and programs. He emphasized that the health sector is vital to Ghana’s productivity and economic growth, making it essential to allocate adequate resources to ensure quality healthcare throughout the nation.
