
The UN Secretary-General, António Guterres has named Hanna Serwa Tetteh of Ghana as Special Representative for Libya and Head of the United Nations Support Mission in Libya (UNSMIL). Tetteh succeeds Abdoulaye Bathily of Senegal, who served in the role until May 2024.
With decades of experience in national, regional, and international affairs, Tetteh brings a wealth of knowledge to her new position. Her impressive background includes serving as Special Envoy of the Secretary-General for the Horn of Africa from 2022 to 2024, Special Representative of the Secretary-General to the African Union, and Director-General of the United Nations Office at Nairobi.
In her home country of Ghana, Tetteh held various high-profile positions, including Minister for Foreign Affairs and Minister for Trade and Industry. She was also a member of the National Security Council, the Armed Forces Council, and served as a Member of Parliament.
Tetteh’s appointment is a testament to her exceptional leadership skills and diplomatic expertise. As she takes on her new role, she will be responsible for leading the UN’s efforts in Libya, working closely with local authorities, and promoting peace and stability in the region.
