The Bank of Ghana, officially inaugurated the bank’s new headquarters, The Bank Square, on November 20, 2024. The ceremony was attended by dignitaries, including governors and deputy governors of sister central banks.

In his address, Dr. Addison welcomed guests and highlighted the significance of The Bank Square as a national monument symbolizing Ghana’s commitment to transforming its economy. He traced the bank’s roots to the Bank of the Gold Coast, established in 1953, and recounted the agitation for a central bank that led to the Bank of Ghana’s establishment on March 4, 1957.

Dr. Addison acknowledged the rapid growth and development of Ghana’s financial sector, particularly under the fourth republic, driven by the vision to make Accra a financial hub. He expressed gratitude to President Akufo-Addo for his support in acquiring the land for The Bank Square, which was previously the subject of litigation.

The governor showcased the building’s features, designed by renowned architect Sir David Adjaye. The 100-meter-tall complex is Ghana’s tallest building and most sustainable EDGE Advanced structure, powered entirely by solar energy. The Bank Square will accommodate over 2,500 staff, house a currency museum, conference facilities, and a 1,500-seat auditorium.

Dr. Addison praised the dedication and professionalism of the project team, including Goldkey Property Limited, Adjaye Associates, and other local partners. He emphasized the building’s role in fostering creativity, collaboration, and efficiency, positioning the Bank of Ghana as a transformative economic agency.

With The Bank Square, the Bank of Ghana’s official address changes from No. 1 Thorpe Road to Number 42 Castle Road. Dr. Addison expressed optimism that this new chapter will drive the bank’s success and demonstrate Ghana’s capabilities in central banking.

The inauguration of The Bank Square marks a significant milestone in Ghana’s economic history, solidifying the Bank of Ghana’s commitment to shaping the nation’s future.
