The Electoral Commission of Ghana has issued a statement announcing the passing of Madam Akua Donkor, the presidential candidate of the Ghana Freedom Party (GFP). According to the statement, the Commission received information on the unfortunate passing of Madam Donkor and has informed the GFP to nominate a new candidate.

The Commission has also suspended the printing of presidential ballot papers, which was near completion, until further notice. Article 50 (4) of the 1992 Constitution provides guidance on the process to follow in the event of the death of a presidential candidate, allowing a 10-day window for nominations.
The GFP is expected to announce its new presidential candidate within the next 72 hours. Roman Fada, the GFP’s vice-presidential candidate, has expressed his readiness to take on the mantle of leadership, should the party’s legal framework permit it.
The Electoral Commission’s statement demonstrates their commitment to transparency and fairness in the electoral process. For more information on the electoral process and updates on the 2024 elections, you can visit the Electoral Commission’s website.
