Reverend John Ntim Fordjour, Member of Parliament for Assin South, has sounded the alarm on the plight of Ghanaians deported from the United States. Speaking in Parliament on February 21, 2025, he highlighted the inhumane treatment of Ghanaian detainees in US centers and the struggles they face upon returning home ¹.
Fordjour’s concerns have prompted Parliament to summon Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, to discuss the issue on February 28, 2025. The MP’s plea is clear: the government must provide support to deportees and establish measures to manage migration issues.
The situation is dire. Many deportees have spent most of their lives in the US and face significant challenges integrating into Ghanaian society. Fordjour emphasized the need for structured reintegration programs, including job placement initiatives, to help them settle.
As the government prepares to address these concerns, the international community watches closely. The treatment of deportees in US detention centers is a stain on human rights, and Ghana’s response will be a testament to its commitment to protecting its citizens.
Ablakwa’s appearance before Parliament is a critical step toward finding solutions. Will the government heed the call to action and provide the necessary support to deportees? Only time will tell, but one thing is clear: the fate of Ghana’s deportees hangs in the balance.
