Ghanaians gathered in Kumasi to mark the 24th anniversary of the Accra Sports Stadium disaster, which claimed the lives of 126 soccer fans in 2001. Herbert Mensah, founding President of the May 9 Foundation and former chairman of Asante Kotoko, led the commemoration walk through the principal streets of Kumasi.

The walk, attended by masses of people from Accra and Kumasi, including the Ashanti regional directorate of the National Sports Authority, students of KNUST, and keep-fit clubs, ended with donations of products and cash to some families. Gifty Pooley, wife of a recently killed soccer fan, also participated in the event.

Mr. Mensah called for greater tolerance among soccer fans, especially in light of recent violence, and appealed for more investment in all sports, particularly those that are underfunded. The event was sponsored by Sunda International, Kivo Gari, and Interplast Ghana Ltd. Mensah stated that the commemoration would continue as long as God gives them life, in respect for the departed souls.
