ACCRA, GHANA – The Parliament of Ghana has launched a US$1,600.00 capacity-building project aimed at enhancing the skills of Members of Parliament and their staff in economic and financial governance. The initiative, a collaborative effort with the World Bank and the UK’s Foreign, Commonwealth and Development Office (FCDO), was officially unveiled by Speaker of Parliament, Rt. Hon. Alban Kingsford Sumana Bagbin.

Speaker Bagbin expressed gratitude to both organizations, emphasizing that the project, titled “Building the Capacity of Parliamentarians for Economic and Financial Governance,” would strengthen Ghana’s democracy and enable Parliament to more effectively fulfill its constitutional mandate. He noted that a retooled Parliament would not only improve legislative efficiency but also help restore confidence in democratic governance and promote sound economic oversight.

The Clerk to Parliament, Mr. Ebenezer Ahumah Djietror, welcomed the project, highlighting its potential to expand engagement between Parliament and development partners by equipping the institution with better tools and expertise for its legislative and oversight responsibilities.

Representatives from the UK, including H.E. Keith McMahon of FCDO and Ms. Michelle Keane of the World Bank, underscored the importance of continuous development in parliamentary procedures, asserting that enhanced understanding of legislative processes and financial management would foster greater accountability, transparency, combat corruption, and ensure prudent management of public funds, aligning with Ghana’s sustainable development goals.
Leaders from both sides of the house,

Mahama Ayariga and Osahen Alexander Afenyo-Markin, deemed the initiative timely and impactful, urging committee leaders to take full responsibility for its successful rollout to enhance Parliament’s efficiency and contribute to Ghana’s development objectives.
