Ghana’s Finance Minister, Dr. Cassiel Ato-Forson, has unveiled ambitious plans to boost the country’s oil and gas production in the 2026 Budget Statement and Economic Policy. The government aims to expand hydrocarbon production through offshore drilling in the Voltaian Basin, with the Ghana National Petroleum Corporation (GNPC) set to commence drilling operations in October 2026.
The government has also announced plans to construct a 1200 Megawatt State-Owned Tema Power Plant to utilize the additional 150 Million standard cubic feet of gas per day from OCT Partners and GPP2. Ghana’s Gas to Power Strategy is expected to transform the energy sector, shifting to cleaner, locally produced natural gas. These initiatives are part of the government’s efforts to drive economic growth and development.
Other key initiatives include President Mahama’s directive for schools to purchase locally produced goods, establishment of a technology-led National Land Registry, and creation of an Independent Value for Money Office to ensure efficiency and accountability. The government aims to make Ghana’s agriculture commercial, modern, and market-driven, with a focus on youth and women-led initiatives.
