Ghana’s Liquefied Petroleum Gas (LPG) consumption saw a modest increase of 4% in 2023. According to the 2023 Industry Report by the Ghana Chamber of Bulk Oil Distributors, LPG consumption rose from 305,076 metric tons in 2022 to 317,465 metric tons in 2023.

The growth is attributed to a rebound in economic activities following a challenging 2022, which saw a rapid depreciation of the cedi and an 86% hike in LPG pump prices. Despite these challenges, LPG remains the primary cooking fuel for 40% of Ghanaians.

The report notes that LPG prices and consumption are inversely related, and the developments in 2022 could hinder the government’s goal of achieving 50% LPG penetration by 2030. However, with investments in expanding LPG infrastructure and promoting its adoption, the growth in LPG consumption is expected to continue.

In rural areas, LPG usage increased marginally from 14.8% to 16.5% in 2023, while urban access rose from 51.3% to 56.1%. This positive trend is a step towards meeting Ghana’s energy needs in an evolving global market.
