The Ashanti Regional Police Command has arrested 44 Cameroonians, including a 29-year-old woman, Bella Merie, for alleged involvement in internet fraud and human trafficking. The arrests were made on Monday, April 7, 2025, at a residence in Kenyasi Abrem, Ashanti Region.

According to Deputy Superintendent of Police Godwin Ahianyo, the suspects were operating a Q-NET scam, promising employment opportunities in Ghana to 43 victims, mostly young adults aged 22-38, in exchange for 4.5 million CFA francs. The police investigation revealed that Merie orchestrated the scheme, duping 32 men and 11 women.

All 44 individuals, including the suspect and victims, have been handed over to the Ghana Immigration Service for repatriation to Cameroon. The Ghana Police Service has reiterated its commitment to combating fraud and protecting citizens and foreign nationals within the country.

This operation highlights the police’s efforts to tackle cybercrime and human trafficking. The Cyber Crime Unit, a specialized unit within the Ghana Police Service, investigates crimes involving digital devices, networks, and the internet. The unit also handles sensitive cases, such as online child exploitation.

In recent years, Ghana has stepped up efforts to combat human trafficking, with the Anti-Human Trafficking Unit conducting numerous investigations and prosecutions. In 2015, the unit investigated 238 potential trafficking cases, resulting in convictions and sentences for traffickers.
