In a bid to improve the efficiency and responsiveness of Ghana’s electricity distribution, the government has inaugurated a seven-member technical committee to explore private sector participation in the operations of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) and the Northern Electricity Distribution Company (NEDCo).
According to the Minister for Energy and Green Transition, John Jinapor, the power distributors face significant challenges, including distribution losses and difficulties in collecting bills ¹. To address these issues, the committee will work out modalities for private sector involvement, which is expected to inject efficiency into the distribution of electricity.
The committee, chaired by Jabesh Amissah-Arthur, comprises experts from various fields, including Ben Boakye of ACEP, Dr. Shafic Sulemana, Dr. Simon Akorli, Ebenezer Baiden, Ama Akua Bulley, and Edward Abrokwah. Minister Jinapor has charged the committee to do their best for the country, and the chairman has assured him of the members’ commitment to the task.
This move is part of the new administration’s promise to take steps to improve the efficiency of Ghana’s electricity distribution. By involving private sector players, the government hopes to address the challenges facing ECG and NEDCo and provide better services to the people.
