The Republic of Ghana played an active role in the 85th Ordinary Session of the African Commission on Human and Peoples’ Rights (ACHPR), signaling its continued dedication to continental human rights frameworks. Held in Banjul, The Gambia, from October 21st to 30th, 2025, this significant gathering brought together various State Parties to engage in vital discussions concerning the promotion and protection of fundamental human and peoples’ rights across Africa. Ghana’s presence was solidified by its delegation, which was spearheaded by the Deputy Minister for Foreign Affairs, James Gyakye Quayson (MP), ensuring the nation’s voice was heard among its regional peers.
Under the chairmanship of Commissioner Iddrisa Sow, the session served as a crucial forum for charting a path forward for human rights advocacy. Central to the debates were the immediate and long-term needs for effective human rights mechanisms, specifically emphasizing the necessity for robust policy development and the strengthening of institutional capacity within member states. These discussions aimed to reinforce the core principles underpinning the ACHPR’s mandate, ensuring that rights established in principle are effectively realized on the ground for African citizens.
In his address, Deputy Minister Quayson powerfully articulated Ghana’s sustained commitment to these shared regional goals. He reaffirmed the nation’s adherence to the principles laid out in the African Charter on Human and Peoples’ Rights, further stressing Ghana’s dedication to collaborative efforts aimed at fostering a continent characterized by strong human rights adherence, effective good governance, and lasting sustainable development. This participation reinforces Ghana’s position as a proactive partner in the ongoing pursuit of a rights-respecting African future.
