ACCRA, GHANA – Ghana joined its African counterparts today at the “Africa for Ocean” Summit of Heads of State and Government, a significant gathering held on the margins of the 2025 United Nations Ocean Conference in Nice, France.
The high-level summit, jointly organized by the Kingdom of Morocco and the Government of France, served as a critical platform for African nations to articulate a unified vision for the safeguarding of marine biodiversity, fostering sustainable ocean governance, and driving the inclusive growth of the continent’s burgeoning blue economy.
Representing Ghana were Emelia Arthur, the Minister for Fisheries and Aquaculture, and Hon. Godfred Seidu Jasaw, the distinguished Chairman of the Parliamentary Select Committee on Food, Agriculture and Cocoa Affairs. Their presence underscored Ghana’s unwavering commitment to international cooperation in addressing the pressing challenges facing global oceans.
Discussions at the summit centered on several crucial priorities tailored to the African context. These included strategies for advancing marine conservation and climate action initiatives led by African nations, strengthening both regional and international partnerships to bolster ocean health, and enhancing technology transfer, innovation, and capacity building across the continent. A key objective was also to elevate Africa’s voice and leadership in global dialogues concerning ocean governance.
Ghana’s proactive participation in this summit reinforces the nation’s dedication to multilateral efforts, its ongoing endeavors to protect vital marine ecosystems, build climate resilience, and cultivate sustainable development rooted in its extensive ocean resources.
