ACCRA, GHANA — A cloud of profound sorrow hangs over Ghana as the nation mourns the tragic loss of eight distinguished public servants, including the Defense Minister, in a devastating plane crash. President John Dramani Mahama addressed a somber nation today, Thursday, August 6, 2025, from the Statehouse, articulating a message of deep personal grief and solemn reflection.

In his powerful and compassionate address, President Mahama expressed the collective heartache of a nation that has lost some of its most dedicated sons. “This is not merely a political or national loss,” he stated, his voice resonating with emotion, “but a personal wound that tears at the very fabric of our national family.” He extended his deepest sympathies to the families, friends, and loved ones of the fallen, assuring them that Ghana shares their sorrow and will forever honor their sacrifice.

The President paid tribute to the eight individuals, highlighting their unwavering commitment and distinguished service to Ghana’s progress.

The victims were identified as Squadron Leader Anala, Flying Officer Ampadu, and Sergeant Addo from the Air Force, along with prominent public figures: Alhaji Muniru Mohammed Limuna, a respected public servant; Samuel Sarpong, a respected statesman; Samuel Aboague, a promising leader; Dr. Omane Boamah, a dedicated leader; and Alhaji Dr. Murtala Mohammed, a passionate advocate for his constituents and a champion of environmental stewardship.

In a move to ensure transparency and accountability, President Mahama announced that a full and transparent investigation into the crash has been initiated by the Ghana Armed Forces. He confirmed the successful retrieval of both the flight data recorders and the cockpit voice recorders, a critical step towards understanding the cause of the tragedy. He vowed that “no stone will be left unturned” in the pursuit of the truth, a promise meant to honor the memory of the fallen by preventing future such disasters. The President also confirmed that the bodies of the departed have been retrieved and that identification and internment processes are underway, being conducted in close coordination with the bereaved families.

Looking ahead, President Mahama outlined the memorial arrangements to honor the heroes. The nation will gather at the Statehouse forecourt on Saturday, August 9, at 5 PM. The period from August 10 to 14 will be dedicated to the solemn process of identification and internment. The nation will culminate its mourning with an interdenominational state funeral on Friday, August 15, at the Black Star Square, a location of national significance, to bid a final farewell to these selfless servants.

In a powerful call for unity, President Mahama urged Ghanaians to set aside their differences and come together in compassion, strength, and shared hope. He emphasized that the greatest tribute to the fallen would be a nation united, striving to build a Ghana worthy of their ultimate sacrifice.
