Accra, Ghana – The Chief Executive Officer of the Ghana Gold Board (GoldBod) announced today that Ghana has achieved unprecedented gold purchases and exports, particularly from the artisanal small-scale mining (ASM) sector, attributing the success to new regulatory frameworks.

Speaking at the “Mining in Motion Summit 2025” at the Kempinski Hotel, the CEO revealed that from February to May 2025, GoldBod purchased and exported $4 billion worth of gold from the ASM sector, marking the first time ASM gold exports have surpassed those from large-scale mining.

The CEO commended President John Dramani Mahama’s vision in establishing the GoldBod, describing it as a “redefining era of leadership, regulation, and transformation” for Ghana’s historically fragmented gold trading sector. He explained that the GoldBod, now the central state agency for overseeing, regulating, buying, selling, assaying, refining, and exporting gold, is mandated to generate foreign exchange, support Bank of Ghana gold reserves, and promote supply chain sustainability.

The GoldBod is now the sole buyer and exporter of all artisanal small-scale gold in Ghana and has rights to purchase from large-scale miners.

Significant strides have been made since GoldBod took over the Precious Minerals Marketing Company (PMMC), including tightened regulatory controls, an intensified fight against gold smuggling, and the deployment of effective aggregation systems that now mop up over 90% of all ASM gold. The CEO highlighted that these measures have substantially increased forex liquidity, contributed to the sustained appreciation of the national currency, and positively impacted living conditions. In May 2025 alone, GoldBod’s ASM gold purchases and exports hit a record 11 tonnes, valued at approximately $1.172 billion.

Looking ahead, the GoldBod plans to roll out a digital traceability technology for its entire supply chain by the end of the year, ensuring every gram of gold is traceable to licensed mines.
Effective September 2025, the GoldBod will also begin training artisanal small-scale miners in environmentally friendly techniques.

The CEO further outlined plans to invest in cooperative mining programs, partner with other mining firms to maximize sustainable production, and dedicate a significant portion of its trading surplus to land reclamation, environmental initiatives, and social responsibility projects in mining communities.

The GoldBod is also working towards moving Ghana from doré exports to bullion in the short to medium term and establishing an ISO-certified and LBMA-compliant assay laboratory by 2026.
