NEW YORK — The governments of Ghana and Finland are exploring avenues for deeper bilateral cooperation, following a high-level meeting on the sidelines of the 80th United Nations General Assembly in New York. Ghana’s Minister for Foreign Affairs, Samuel Okudzeto Ablakwa, held discussions with his Finnish counterpart, Elina Valtonen, focusing on strengthening diplomatic and economic ties.
Minister Ablakwa used the meeting to express Ghana’s strong support for Finland, commending the nation’s consistent commitment to global peace and security, as well as its principled voice in multilateral affairs.
Looking ahead, the Ghanaian Minister highlighted that 2027 will mark the 50th Anniversary of diplomatic relations between the two countries. He urged both nations to leverage this milestone to significantly deepen collaboration, specifically identifying trade, education, technology, climate resilience, and peacebuilding as key areas for joint effort. To facilitate these enhanced engagements, Minister Ablakwa proposed the establishment of diplomatic missions in both countries to solidify institutional and people-to-people links.
