The Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Ghana issued a press statement in Accra on December 3, 2025, expressing great concern over the rapidly evolving political and human rights situation in the United Republic of Tanzania following the general elections held on October 29, 2025. Ghana noted that the post-election environment has been characterized by significant security developments, including the loss of lives, street clashes, and violent stand-offs between security forces and protesters, raising considerable implications for the long-term stability of the country.

The Republic of Ghana regrets the civilian casualties and extended heartfelt condolences to the bereaved families, while wishing a speedy recovery to all those injured. Ghana stated it recognizes and supports the Tanzanian authorities’ assurance to address impunity through accountability, justice, and respect for constitutional order. As a result, the statement urged the Government of Tanzania to ensure that the security forces and other relevant state institutions are mindful of their obligations to promote and protect human rights, especially those of the protesters.

Ghana further stressed the need for enhanced efforts by all stakeholders—including the authorities, political parties, civil society, protesters, and security forces—to respect the rule of law and democracy, uphold good governance, and safeguard the civic space essential to preventing violations and abuses.

Mindful of its responsibilities as a member of the United Nations Human Rights Council, Ghana joined calls made by the African Union, the Commonwealth, and the United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights for all actors to exercise maximum restraint and for the conduct of transparent and credible impartial investigations into the post-election violence.

The Ministry emphasized that a fair, inclusive, and equitable process anchored in the rule of law will ensure due process access for the victims, those detained, and the alleged perpetrators, as guaranteed under international human rights law. In conclusion, Ghana called on the international community to provide all necessary support to Tanzania at this critical juncture.
