Ghana joined the global community on April 28, 2025, to mark the World Day for Safety and Health at Work. Minister for Labour, Jobs and Employment, Dr. Abdul Rashid Hassan Pelpuo, emphasized the need for stronger safeguards to protect worker welfare amid technological progress. Speaking at a ceremony in Accra, Dr. Pelpuo stressed that every worker deserves to return home safely after work, and that technology should not compromise the commitment to protecting workers.

The Minister cited International Labour Organization (ILO) figures showing over 2.78 million work-related deaths annually, emphasizing that these numbers represent lives, families, and futures. Dr. Pelpuo praised Ghana’s tripartite partners and reaffirmed President John Dramani Mahama’s administration commitment to safe and dignified work. He announced plans to introduce new legislation suited to digital workplaces and reiterated Ghana’s commitment to ratifying ILO Conventions 155 and 187.

Dr. Pelpuo urged employers to view safety as a worthwhile investment and emphasized the importance of shared responsibility and worker involvement in technology design to create resilient workplaces. The Minister’s call to action highlights the need for collaborative efforts to prioritize worker safety and health in Ghana’s rapidly changing work environment.
