The Ghana Coalition Against Galamsey has urged President John Dramani Mahama to take immediate action against the Member of Parliament for Aowin Constituency, Oscar Larbi, over allegations of his involvement in illegal mining activities. The coalition’s request comes amidst the devastating destruction of the Tano Anwia Forest Reserve in the Aowin Municipality, Western North Region, where illegal miners have overrun the reserve, causing significant forest loss.
The Aowin Traditional Council has publicly accused the MP of being involved in the illegal mining operations, with details of the destruction and allegations against the MP widely reported in the media. The coalition is calling for a full-scale investigation into the matter and is seeking reassurance that the government remains committed to ending illegal mining in Ghana.
The issue of galamsey has become an existential threat to Ghana, with severe environmental degradation, destruction of critical water bodies, food insecurity, and significant health risks due to mercury and cyanide contamination. The coalition is demanding that the government takes decisive action against any public official found culpable of engaging in galamsey.
This is not the first time the coalition has spoken out against galamsey. Previously, they pressed the National House of Chiefs to declare their stance on the issue, citing the need for traditional leaders to protect customary resources from illegal mining activities. The coalition comprises various organizations, including media, labor, religious groups, and civil society organizations, all working together to support sustainable environmental governance in Ghana.
