Today, Ghana laid to rest a true patriot and hero, Lieutenant General Arnold K. Quainoo, former Chief of Defence Staff of the Ghana Armed Forces. At his final funeral rites at St. Catherine Catholic Church in Burma Camp, President John Dramani Mahama paid tribute to Quainoo’s remarkable life and legacy.
Quainoo’s dedication to national service was unparalleled, and his role as the first commander of the Economic Community of West African States Monitoring Group (ECOMOG) during the Liberian civil war in 1990 was a testament to his bravery and leadership. He played a crucial role in regional peacekeeping efforts, earning him a special place in Ghana’s history.
President Mahama reflected on Quainoo’s exemplary life, describing him as a symbol of patriotism and integrity. “He is the last of his generation that is past who believed in the love of country… They were principled and they did things out of patriotism,” Mahama said. He urged Ghanaians to draw inspiration from Quainoo’s legacy and rekindle a spirit of patriotism, emphasizing the importance of putting national interest above personal gain.
Quainoo’s remarkable career spanned several decades, with notable appointments including Chief of Army Staff and General Officer Commanding the Ghana Armed Forces. His passing marks the end of an era, but his legacy will continue to inspire generations of Ghanaians to come.
