Former President Akufo-Addo was among the distinguished guests who gathered to bid farewell to the late Mamponghene, Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, at his “Dɔte Yie” funeral rites, which commenced on Friday, June 6, 2025, and concluded on Monday, June 9, 2025. The former president made a notable donation of GH¢200,000 during the solemn occasion.
Daasebre Osei Bonsu II, who passed away on April 20, 2025, at the age of 86, held a significant position in Ghanaian traditional leadership. As Mamponghene and Krontihene (Duke) of Asante, he occupied the Silver Stool of Asanteman, a role second only to the Asantehene himself.
The connection between the former president and the late Mamponghene runs deep, as Mr. Akufo-Addo was once an in-law to Daasebre. In the early 1990s, he married his second wife, Eleanor Nkansah-Gyamenah, who was the niece of the revered Mamponghene. However, Eleanor Nkansah-Gyamenah tragically passed away in 1993.
