Fitch Solutions Warns Gold Price Drop Threatens Ghana’s Reserves

Fitch Solutions has issued a warning that a significant decline in global gold prices could swiftly deplete Ghana’s international reserves. The firm highlights that such a downturn could be triggered by a shift towards more conventional trade policies in the United States or the resolution of major global geopolitical tensions.

According to the UK-based research firm, a sharp fall in gold prices would make it difficult for the Bank of Ghana to maintain the stability of the cedi, potentially leading to a renewed sell-off of the local currency.

This scenario, Fitch suggests, would also contribute to elevated inflation, a weakening of consumer and investor sentiment, and compel the central bank to maintain higher interest rates for an extended period.

Ghana, a significant gold exporter, has benefited from elevated global gold prices in recent times, which has aided in rebuilding international reserves, stabilizing the cedi, and easing inflationary pressures. However, Fitch cautions that this favorable trend is fragile and subject to external market shifts.

The warning is part of Fitch Solutions’ downside risk outlook for Ghana, emphasizing the country’s vulnerability to fluctuations in the international gold market despite recent economic gains.
