Fighting for an AIDS-Free Generation: Breaking Down Barriers to End the Epidemic

December 1, 2024, marks World AIDS Day, a global call to action to stop the unfair barriers that hinder efforts to end AIDS. The World Health Organization (WHO) is urging everyone to take action to break down these barriers and ensure that everyone has access to the care and support they need.

The statistics are stark: over 39.9 million people worldwide live with human immunodeficiency virus (HIV), the virus that causes AIDS. While there is no cure for HIV, it can be prevented and treated. However, many people continue to face barriers to accessing life-saving care, including stigma, discrimination, and lack of access to healthcare services.

To reduce the risk of HIV, the WHO recommends several key steps: using condoms during sex, getting tested for HIV and other infections, choosing medical male circumcision, and getting safe help if you use drugs. In addition, healthcare workers may suggest additional medicines, known as PrEP, to help prevent HIV.

By protecting everyone’s right to health and bringing down new infections, we can achieve an AIDS-free generation and ensure the sustainability of the HIV response. It’s time to take action and break down the barriers that stand in the way of ending AIDS. Together, we can create a world where everyone has access to the care and support they need to live healthy, fulfilling lives.
