“Fake Doctor” Busted in Ghana for Impersonation and Travel Scam

ACCRA, GHANA – A man has been apprehended by the Ghana Police Service for allegedly impersonating a medical doctor and defrauding individuals with promises of international travel. Fredrick Papa Kow-Assifuah was arrested on Thursday, June 6, 2025, in Kasoa Crispo City, Central Region, by officers from the Police Intelligence Directorate (PID) Headquarters.

At the time of his arrest, Kow-Assifuah was reportedly dressed in a white lab coat with a stethoscope around his neck, preparing to meet another potential victim he had contacted online. A subsequent search of his premises uncovered various medical items, including stethoscopes, IV drips, syringes, sample bottles, plaster, and vaccine bottles. Authorities also seized a Ghanaian passport and GH¢8,500.00 in cash.

During questioning, Kow-Assifuah admitted to posing as a doctor at the United Brain Hospital in Mallam, Accra. He also confessed to using his fabricated identity to engage in online relationships with women, ultimately convincing them to pay for fraudulent travel arrangements to Europe. The suspect is currently in police custody, assisting with ongoing investigations, and is expected to appear in court.
