LUSAKA, ZAMBIA – The United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (ECA) Sub-regional Office for Southern Africa, in collaboration with the University of Zambia’s Department of Economics, the International Monetary Fund (IMF), and the United Nations Development Programmes (UNDP), hosted a public lecture on Zambia’s debt restructuring process.

The event aimed to promote student engagement on the implications of national debt management, explore the impact of the ongoing debt restructuring program on Zambia’s economic prospects, and foster dialogue among partner organizations to support sustainable and inclusive economic growth.

Speakers from the IMF and ECA presented on the regional outlook for Sub-Saharan Africa and prospects for inclusive growth in Zambia. They emphasized the need for policy reforms, economic diversification, and effective implementation of the African Continental Free Trade Area to achieve sustainable economic growth.

Student participants called for active involvement in holding the government accountable for debts incurred and revenue collection. Experts concurred on the need to support micro, small, and medium enterprises and ensure the restructuring process protects the most vulnerable Zambians.
