The Coalition of Domestic Election Observers (CODEO) recently held a press briefing to address electoral violence cases associated with Ghana’s 2020 and 2024 elections. H. Kwasi Prempeh, Executive Director of the Center, welcomed key stakeholders, including representatives from the military, media, and civil society, to the briefing.

CODEO’s observation reports highlighted several concerns, including the abuse of incumbency, where state vehicles were used to campaign on behalf of incumbent candidates ¹. Additionally, the report noted a lack of voter education, which could lead to misinformation and disinformation.

Prempeh emphasized the need for stakeholders to work together to prevent electoral violence. He called on the Electoral Commission, the Ghana Police Service, and the National Peace Council to intensify their efforts to ensure a peaceful and credible election.

CODEO’s recommendations included the intensification of voter education efforts, particularly in rural areas, and the need for political parties to refrain from using state resources for campaign purposes.

The briefing was attended by representatives from the European Union in Ghana, the Electoral Commission, the Ghana Police Service, and the Ghana military service. CODEO’s call to action serves as a reminder of the importance of ensuring peaceful and credible elections in Ghana.
