In a bid to ensure a peaceful and orderly electoral process, the National Commission for Civic Education (NCCE) has announced a ban on all drinking and beer bars across Ghana on December 7, 2024, which is Election Day ¹. According to Mr. Fred Frimpong, a Civic Education Officer of the Commission, beer bars will only be allowed to open after 6:00 PM, once the polls have closed.
The ban is aimed at controlling alcoholism among the populace, which could potentially disrupt the electoral process. “Allowing the drinking and beer bars to operate on Election Day can disturb the electoral process,” Mr. Frimpong emphasized. He also cautioned voters against double voting, a serious electoral offense that will be prosecuted.
Reverend Prince Owusu Asaku, Chairman of the Bono East Regional Peace Council, echoed this sentiment, urging citizens to remain law-abiding and peace-loving. “Ghana requires absolute peace and social cohesion to facilitate her accelerated national development,” he stressed.
This move by the NCCE is a proactive step towards maintaining peace and order during the elections. By limiting access to alcohol, the Commission hopes to minimize potential disruptions and ensure a smooth voting process.
