ECG Clears Air on Koforidua Fire Outbreak Allegations

The Electricity Company of Ghana Limited (ECG) has vehemently denied allegations that its staff caused a fire outbreak at a residential facility in Two-Streams, Koforidua. According to ECG, the accusations are completely false and should be ignored.

The controversy began when a postpaid customer, who owes ECG a staggering GH¢6,519.38 since September 2024, was disconnected for non-payment of bills. During a revenue mobilization exercise on January 24, 2025, ECG staff discovered that the customer had illegally reconnected their power supply. When the team attempted to disconnect the facility again, the customer resisted and threatened them with a machete.

With the assistance of the Police, the ECG team safely disconnected the power supply directly from the pole outside the facility. However, a fire outbreak occurred later that day, hours after the ECG team had left the scene.

ECG categorically stated that disconnecting power supply directly from a pole cannot result in a fire outbreak, rendering the customer’s allegations completely false. The company emphasized that disconnection is a lawful measure to ensure customers pay for their electricity consumption.

As a customer-centric company, ECG assured the public that it would never engage in activities that endanger lives and property. The company urged customers to pay their electricity bills promptly and avoid illegal connections, which are considered criminal offenses with legal consequences.
