In a strong statement delivered during the inauguration of the Sabon Zongo Neighborhood Watch Committee of Zongo Against Drugs and for Development in Accra, Deputy Minister for the Interior, Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, warned that all individuals who indulge in drugs will face the full force of the law and be prosecuted. The Minister reiterated the government’s unwavering commitment to tackling the menace of drug abuse in Ghanaian communities and called upon all stakeholders to join forces in the fight.
Mr. Terlabi emphasized the necessity of a multifaceted approach to address the complex issue, citing the devastating effects it has on individuals, families, and communities. He noted that data from the Narcotics Control Commission reveals the most commonly abused drugs in Ghana are cannabis, heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine, with a worrying 60% of drug users falling between the ages of 15 and 35.
The Deputy Minister highlighted that the government, through the Ministry of the Interior and the Narcotics Control Commission, is committed to strengthening law enforcement, implementing public education campaigns, and providing necessary support for the rehabilitation and reintegration of those affected by drug abuse.
He stated that the launch of the Sabon Zongo Neighborhood Watch Committee is a significant step towards empowering communities to take ownership in the fight. Hon. Terlabi commended the Chiefs, Imams, and opinion leaders for their support and charged the new committee members to work diligently with integrity and accountability, concluding that through unity, Ghanaians can create a society “free from the bane of drugs and where our youth can thrive and reach their full potential.”
