ACCRA – The Deputy Minister for the Interior, Hon. Ebenezer Okletey Terlabi, has urged the Ghana Prisons Service to prioritize the rehabilitation and reintegration of inmates, moving beyond a sole focus on detention. He made this call today at the Passing-Out Parade of Recruit Course 125 at the Prison Officers’ Training School in Accra.
Hon. Okletey Terlabi underscored the government’s commitment to transforming the Prisons Service into a modern, humane, and efficient institution. He highlighted ongoing government interventions aimed at repositioning the Service, including the expansion of vocational training, educational programs, and enterprises designed to reinforce rehabilitation, reformation, and successful reintegration into society.
The Deputy Minister further revealed upcoming government initiatives, such as the “One Million Coders Program,” intended to equip both inmates and officers with essential ICT skills for the digital economy. Additionally, plans are in place to expand the Service’s mechanized activities and acquire land for farming, promoting self-sufficiency and enhancing vocational training opportunities.
Mr. Terlabi commended the graduating recruits for their dedication and discipline, encouraging them to serve with courage, fairness, and compassion throughout their careers.
