ACCRA – China is deepening its human resource development support for Ghana, with the latest initiative providing strategic training to key staff at Ghana’s Ministry of Trade, Agribusiness and Industry. The move, announced at a reception hosted by the Chinese Embassy in Accra on Friday, September 5, 2025, underscores the strengthening bilateral ties between the two nations.

Deputy Minister of Trade, Agribusiness & Industry, Sampson Ahi, expressed gratitude for China’s sustained support in developing human capital within his Ministry and other government institutions. He noted that the Ministry’s expanded mandate in agribusiness, private sector development, and economic growth has created a “greater need for skilled leadership, technical expertise and institutional resilience.”

Mr. Ahi described the training, conducted through workshops and programs for senior and middle-level staff, as both “timely and impactful,” providing vital insights into global best practices and policy innovation. He also highlighted that these programs promote “South-South cooperation,” fostering a bridge of mutual respect and development between the two countries.

Beyond the Trade Ministry, Hon. Ahi acknowledged China’s broader contributions to Ghana’s infrastructure, including roads, railways, and digital systems. He emphasized the strong economic partnership, noting that China is Ghana’s largest global trading partner, and Ghana is China’s seventh-largest trading partner in Africa.

Chinese Ambassador to Ghana, H.E. Tong Defa, echoed these sentiments, calling Ghana an important partner for China in Africa. He revealed that since 2008, more than 8,000 Ghanaians have participated in short-term training and degree programs in China. The Ambassador noted that Ghana stands to benefit from China’s pledge at the 2024 Beijing Summit of the Forum on China-Africa Cooperation to train over 60,000 African professionals in the next three years. So far in 2025, 184 Ghanaians have already been recommended for these programs in fields like transportation and communications.
