The Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago, GNC, issued a statement announcing the death of Flt. Lt. Jerry John Rawlings, Rtd., former Head Of State and first President of the Fourth Republic of Ghana. The statement was released by Mr. Paa Kwasi Sam, the President of the Organization.
The statement by the President of the GNC reads ‘The Ghana National Council of Metropolitan Chicago regrets to announce the death of Former President Flt. Lieutenant Jerry John Rawlings Rtd., Founder of the National Democratic Congress (NDC). Our thoughts and prayers are with the nation and the Rawlings family. May his soul rest in peace”.
The late Ghanaian head of state was the highest Ghanaian official to Grace Chicago’s flagship event, Ghanafest, in 2006. After his participation , Ghanafest became a household name within the Ghanaian communities home and abroad.

Mr. Rawlings died on November 12, 2020 from complications of COVID-19 at the Nation’s premier Hospital, Korle-Bu.
Meanwhile, personalities across the world have eulogized the late president Jerry John Rawlings for championing several anti-corruption campaigns during his reign as military head of state and constitutionally elected President.
Others also hold the view that his reigns were not a democratic as it was saddled with intimidation and violence.
