Dolton, Illinois, January 20, 2024: Funerals are a massive deal in Ghana. The people of the West African nation revere the dead. This is portrayed at funerals within communities across the country. It allows family, friends, and loved ones to sympathize, comfort, support, and show their love to the bereaved family. The Ghanaian community in the diaspora is no exception. When one loses a loved one at home, in Ghana, or abroad, the community rallies together to support and celebrate the departed’s life. They also raise funds to assist the bereaved family to give the departed a fitting remembrance.
The GaDangme Community Organization, Ghanaian associations and churches, and members of the Ghanaian community in Chicago celebrated the life of the late Onukpa Edmund Addoquaye Addo, father of Evelyn Tetteh Ado. Evelyn is the President of the Church of the Ghanaian Community of Chicago and an elder of the Gadangme Community Organization. In attendance were Nii Amarh Akonfrah I, Manye Naa Ohui Amachoe Ablade I, Chief and Queenmother of the Gadangme Community Organization, respectively, and their elders. Others are members of the Church of the Ghanaian Community, led by the Resident Pastor, Reverend Emmanuel Betson.
In a short exhortation, Rev. Betson used the story of Lazarus in the Bible to assure the audience that when it comes to death, we Christians should not be as sorrowful as those who have no hope because, to us, death is not final or a loss. It is like falling asleep and resting from our labors, awaiting the day of resurrection. At that time, Jesus Christ, who is the resurrection and life, will come and wake us up with a loud trumpet sound from the sky and lead us to heaven, he assured the gathering. “There, He will wipe away all our tears and give us unspeakable joy,” Re. Betson concluded.
In a statement to the community, the bereaved family wrote, “The Addo Family, home and abroad, thank all families, friends, loved ones, and well-wishers for the outpouring of love, prayers, and support in diverse ways. Your words of comfort have sustained us in our most challenging moment. May the Almighty God continue to bless and keep you”.
